Questions about nut butters
What you are seeing in your Chocolate Hazelnut Butter or Vanilla Almond Butter jars is called cocoa bloom. This occurs naturally when the cocoa butter separates, solidifies and rises to the surface of the jar. Although this blooming is not a food safety hazard, and it is still consumable, we understand how the appearance may be alarming.
Not at this time. There is currently no technology available for a fully compostable or recyclable squeeze pack, but we’re continuing to explore this as a possibility.
Glass jars are more susceptible to breakage in production and shipping. Our 100% BPA-free recyclable plastic jars provide a shatter-free experience. In 2022, we transitioned to jars that use 30% less plastic while holding the same amount of nut butter — a meaningful step in our sustainability journey.
In 2022, we transitioned to nut butter jars that use 30% less plastic (while holding the same amount of delicious nut butter). We’re proud of this step in our sustainability journey to help reduce the impact of our products on the environment by reducing virgin plastic and are continuing to seek more sustainable packaging options so that we can feel as good about our packaging as we do about the products inside.

The optimal shelf life of our nut butters is 1 year from its manufacturing date. From a food safety standpoint, our nut butters are safe to consumer past the optimal shelf life, however product quality will decrease the longer it sits past the optimal shelf life. As with any product made without artificial preservatives, we recommend eating our nut butters by the Best By Date (which is printed on the jar).
Our nut butters should always be creamy and delicious. If yours is unusually dry, note the best by date and pick up a jar from a different batch next time. We’d love to hear from you if this happens so we can address it!
While our nut butters are not certified organic, they are made with organic ingredients. At this time, we do not source organic nuts for our nut butters, however JUSTIN’S® is committed to mindfully sourcing ingredients. If you have any additional questions, we’d love to hear your thoughts!
